Domestic airlines cancel 190 flights, delay 5,225 in 2 months – NCAA

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has raised concerns about the increasing delays and cancellations of flights by domestic airlines.

Acting Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, revealed that in September 2024, 5,291 flights were operated, out of which 2,434 were delayed, and 79 were cancelled. In October 2024, 5,513 flights were recorded, with 2,791 delays and 111 cancellations.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting titled “Finding Lasting Solutions to Flight Disruptions,” Najomo emphasised the impact of these disruptions on passengers, including financial losses and eroded trust in the aviation industry.

“The Senate President and other officials have contacted me regarding these issues. We cannot ignore the impact these disruptions have on the public,” he said.

Najomo reminded airline operators of the mandatory NCAA regulations on passenger rights, which require proper communication, refreshments, and alternative travel arrangements during significant delays or cancellations.

He urged airlines to manage disruptions professionally and warned passengers against destructive behaviour or assaulting airline staff, as such actions would not be tolerated.

The Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, supported Najomo’s stance, stating that poor handling of delays by airlines is the root of the problem.

The meeting included representatives from the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and other stakeholders.
