Police in Abuja arrest man for allegedly shooting friend after argument

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Obinna Nwigwe, for allegedly shooting his friend, Andrew Philemon, during a heated argument at Najob Guest House in Bwari.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, describing it as a shocking case of violent crime.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on December 26, 2024, following a distress call about gunfire. Responding officers found 29-year-old Philemon critically injured from a gunshot wound. The suspect, armed with a pump-action rifle, claimed self-defence after their argument escalated.

Police officers arrested Nwigwe at the scene and conducted a search of his residence, uncovering a cache of weapons. Items recovered included: Five Dane guns, One English-made single-barrel gun, AK-47 magazine loaded with 29 rounds of live ammunition, Four live cartridges and 17 spent cartridges, bow with arrows, Knives and a sword-stick, toy gun, a taser, and bulletproof jacket.

“The discovery of this arsenal highlights the dangers of illegal firearm possession,” SP Adeh noted.

Philemon, the victim, is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Abuja, while Nwigwe remains in custody as investigations progress.

The FCT Police Command has assured residents of its resolve to tackle violent crime and dismantle criminal networks. SP Adeh called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities.

FCT Police Commissioner Tunji Disu emphasised the importance of community participation in maintaining security.
“The safety and security of our community depend on active citizen involvement. We urge everyone to report any suspicious activities,” he said.
