Nigeria seeks extradition of Simon Ekpa – Defence Chief

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, on Tuesday, confirmed that Nigeria has submitted the necessary documentation for the extradition of separatist leader Simon Ekpa to the Finland Government.

Speaking during a national television broadcast monitored in Lagos, Gen. Musa remarked, “Well, I’m sure he (Ekpa) is cooling off somewhere.

Legal action is set to follow, and while I don’t want to disclose too much detail, I am pleased to confirm that he has been arrested.”

He further stated that the Federal Government has successfully sent most of the required documents to Finnish authorities, expressing confidence that the proper actions will be taken.

Additionally, Gen. Musa noted that the sit-at-home orders promoted by Ekpa and his affiliates in the Southeast are diminishing, thanks to the military’s clearance operations.

In November 2024, Finnish authorities apprehended Ekpa, along with four others, on charges related to terrorism, including incitement to violence and terrorism financing.

The district court in Lahti has since placed him under remand, establishing probable cause for public incitement with terrorist intent linked to activities in Nigeria.

Ekpa has been accused of leveraging social media to disseminate separatist propaganda associated with the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), a group advocating for the secession of Nigeria’s Southeastern region.
