Senate sets January 31 for ₦49.7tn budget passage as defence begins

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Adeola Olamilekan, has announced January 31, 2025, as the provisional date for the passage of the ₦49.7 trillion budget as the committee gears up to commence the budget defence process on Tuesday.

Olamilekan shared this information during a meeting with the chairmen of key committees, where they discussed the framework for the upcoming budget defence sessions, aimed at facilitating a smooth path toward enacting the budget into law.

He indicated that once the Senate reconvenes on January 14, 2025, there would be an immediate two-week recess to allow for uninterrupted budget defence proceedings.

Additionally, Olamilekan noted that a retreat is scheduled for Thursday, bringing together ministries, departments, agencies, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders for in-depth discussions and insights related to the budget proposal.

According to the timeline, from January 15 to 18, committees are expected to present their findings, followed by the Appropriations Committee collating and finalising the documents.

Emphasising the tight schedule, Olamilekan called for heightened efforts from lawmakers, urging them to prioritise the budget process over holiday plans to ensure a timely resolution.
