Tinubu pledges to lift Africa out of poverty

President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed African leaders’ commitment to lifting their nations out of poverty and building resilient economies at their own pace during a speech at the swearing-in of Ghana’s new President John Mahama in Accra on Tuesday.

Tinubu, who attended as Special Guest of Honour, emphasized that African nations have found their own path to success and will continue to strive for progress without external validation. “We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves,” he stated. “We shall lift our nations out of poverty and build a resilient economy at our own pace.”

The Nigerian president also expressed his unwavering support for Ghana, saying, “Today, I am here not only as the President of Nigeria but also as an African in resolute support for Ghana and her people.”

He praised the peaceful transfer of power in Ghana, describing Mahama’s inauguration as a moment of pride for Ghanaians, the African continent, and the diaspora. “This lays to bed the question of whether Ghana and Africa are capable of democratic and productive endeavours. Ghana has answered that question resoundingly,” he said.

Tinubu drew parallels between Ghana’s journey and Nigeria’s, noting that both countries draw inspiration from their founding leaders, who fought for independence and nurtured strong ties between the nations.

He spoke highly of President Mahama, describing him as a leader with “patriotic vision and substance” who is deeply committed to the welfare of his people. “Your new president is a man who loves his nation and believes it has a mission to fulfil,” Tinubu remarked.

The Nigerian president also expressed confidence that the new Ghanaian government under Mahama would enhance bilateral cooperation, contributing to greater prosperity for both nations. He urged continued focus on regional integration and tackling critical challenges like poverty, youth unemployment, instability, and insurgency.
