Police save pregnant woman detained over husband’s offence

The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman, Mrs Chidinma, who was allegedly detained for two days by the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area.

A viral video had initially claimed her detention was due to her husband’s debt, but the police clarified that the case involved an alleged theft by her husband.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, ordered her immediate release after intercepting the viral video.

The Commissioner condemned the vigilante group’s actions, warning against abuse of power.

“The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman allegedly detained over a case of stealing by her husband in a security office at Okija,” the statement read.

The Commissioner further assured that measures are being taken to prevent such occurrences in the future, adding, “The root cause of the incident would be addressed to avert future occurrences.

“Necessary moves with relevant authorities to checkmate the excesses of the few unprofessional AVG members in the state have been initiated,” the statement said.
