Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, commended the Bill and Melinda Gates and Dangote Foundations for their support to the state’s healthcare system.

Governor Buni made the commendation at the 2019 End-of-Year Review Meeting on the Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Strengthening Routine Immunization in Damaturu.

“I want to acknowledge the steady progress that has been made, a progress that was possible largely because of the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates and Dangote Foundations,” he said.

He also acknowledges the support of other partners working with the State Primary Healthcare Management Board and the State Ministry of Health.

Buni noted that with a relative improvement in security across the state within the year under review, more areas were covered and provided with integrated health services.

“A significant number of our women, children and new-borns have been reached with life-saving vaccines and commodities which is significant in helping to reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality in the State”, he said.

He added that the state, with the support of the foundations and developmental partners, also made progress in the area of human-resource-for-health.

“We have made a 100 per cent in nursing students’ allowances, recruited 37 midwives who graduated from the Dr Shehu Sule of Nursing and Midwifery.

“We engaged the services of 207 nurses at our Health Management Board and our State University Teaching Hospital and increased the admission quota for community midwives from 40 to 160.

“The state is also constructing an additional 200-bed capacity hostel for students at the Dr Shehu Sule College of Nursing among others”, Buni said.

He stressed that the Yobe Government would continue to work with the two foundations and other development partners.

“We will also scale up our efforts toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and all health-related sustainable development goals”, Buni added.
