ASUU calls off two-week warning strike following “useful engagements” with FG
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike following renewed progress in negotiations with the Federal Government over the implementation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement.
ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, made the announcement on Wednesday after an overnight National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that concluded around 4:00 a.m.
The union had declared the warning strike on October 13, citing the government’s slow response to long-standing issues, including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, payment of withheld salaries, and adequate funding for the revitalisation of public universities.

Other demands include the settlement of 25–35% salary arrears, over four years of promotion arrears, and the release of withheld third-party deductions such as cooperative contributions and union check-off dues. ASUU also urged an end to the alleged victimisation of lecturers at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO.
Piwuna said the decision to suspend the strike was made in recognition of the efforts of students, parents, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and other stakeholders who facilitated dialogue between the union and the government.
He noted that while progress has been made, “a lot more work is still required” to fully resolve the issues.
According to him, ASUU’s NEC agreed to suspend the strike in good faith as the government has shown commitment by returning to the negotiation table
