Kebbi deputy speaker regains freedom days after abduction

The Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Samaila Bagudo, who was abducted by gunmen suspected to be Lakurawa terrorists, has regained his freedom.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, Ahmed Idris, confirmed the development in a telephone interview, late Saturday night, saying the lawmaker had been released and reunited with his family.

Bagudo was kidnapped on Thursday night, October 31, 2025, at about 8:20 p.m. in his hometown, Bagudo, the headquarters of Bagudo Local Government Area, shortly after observing Isha’i prayers.

Eyewitnesses said the heavily armed attackers stormed the town, whisked away the 60 year old legislator, and fled to an unknown destination, sparking fear among residents.

Following the incident, security agencies, including the Kebbi State Police Command, military personnel, and local vigilantes, launched a coordinated manhunt to secure his release.

Police spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar earlier confirmed the abduction, assuring that an intensive search and rescue operation was underway. He quoted the Commissioner of Police, Bello M. Sani, as reaffirming the Command’s commitment to rescuing the lawmaker and bringing the kidnappers to justice.

“The Commissioner of Police reiterates the Command’s unwavering determination to ensure the safe rescue of the Honourable member and the arrest of the culprits,” the statement read.

Although details of how Bagudo regained his freedom remain unclear, sources within the government confirmed that he was released unhurt and has since been reunited with his family.

Residents of Bagudo and nearby communities have expressed relief following the lawmaker’s safe return after days of anxiety and heightened security patrols in the area.
