ISWAP executes Army commander after tracking his location despite successful NAF rescue
The dramatic rescue of Nigerian Army troops and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members from an ISWAP ambush in the Damboa–Biu axis of Borno State has ended in tragedy, as the commander who led the operation was later captured and executed by terrorists after they reportedly intercepted a message revealing his safe location, PRNigeria reports.
The Brigade Commander, had earlier confirmed to his superiors that he was out of danger following a coordinated air–ground intervention. But according to multiple security sources, his communication inadvertently enabled the terrorists to trace his position, leading to his abduction and eventual execution after interrogation.
PRNigeria had earlier detailed how Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft swiftly intervened to rescue ground troops caught in a heavy ISWAP ambush. The operation began when troops, led by the Brigadier General, unknowingly advanced through a booby-trapped route. After an intense gunfight and a surge in terrorist reinforcements, the commander ordered a tactical withdrawal and sent a distress call for air support.

NAF aircraft diverted from ongoing missions to deliver close air support, helping to disperse the terrorists and extract the commander, his troops, and accompanying CJTF members.
A defence intelligence source told PRNigeria that the combined effort neutralised scores of terrorists with minimal military casualties.

However, the commander’s subsequent killing highlights the severe operational risks in the North-East and reinforces the urgent need for secure, uncompromised communication channels in ongoing counterterrorism operations
