2027: Atiku formally joins ADC, registers in Adamawa
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, marking a major turning point in Nigeria’s opposition politics as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
The registration took place on Monday, days after Atiku publicly revealed his decision to join the ADC during a meeting with supporters and stakeholders in his home state. His aide, Abdul Rasheeth, confirmed the development, while videos from the ceremony showed supporters cheering, singing, and waving placards as Atiku’s convoy arrived.
Shortly after completing the process, Atiku announced on his X handle: “It’s official. –AA.”
Atiku had earlier endorsed the ADC in July as a rallying platform for opposition leaders—including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal—to coordinate efforts against President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Until now, however, he and other key figures had stopped short of formally joining the party. His registration is therefore seen as a major step in unifying opposition forces under one structure. Analysts say his entry could bolster the ADC’s visibility and organisational strength as the election draws nearer.

Speaking on the party’s prospects, Senator Nazif Gamawa, ADC National Vice Chairman, expressed optimism that the ADC could win future elections even without sitting governors. He referenced former President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory over an incumbent as proof that political momentum, not incumbency, determines electoral outcomes.
“The people already believe a new political movement is the option, so ADC is the saviour. We are giving them one blow,” he said.
Gamawa dismissed reports of internal party crises and urged politicians dissatisfied with their current platforms to join the ADC. He assured that the party would not impose exorbitant nomination fees, promising a level playing field for all aspirants.
He emphasised fairness, youth mentorship, and mass participation as core party values, urging citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and vote responsibly to break the cycle of poor leadership.
With Atiku now officially in its ranks, the ADC is expected to draw heightened attention as political alignments take shape ahead of 2027—a development that could significantly redefine Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
