Iran accuses G7 of double standards on human rights

Iran has condemned the Group of Seven (G7) over what it described as hypocrisy and interference following a statement by the bloc criticising Tehran’s human rights record.
In a reaction issued on Friday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the G7’s comments were politically motivated and amounted to meddling in Iran’s internal affairs. The ministry accused the group made up of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan, alongside the European Union of selectively raising human rights concerns while ignoring alleged abuses by their allies.

The G7 had earlier released a statement expressing concern over Iran’s handling of recent protests and calling on authorities to respect fundamental freedoms and the rights of citizens. The bloc also warned that further measures could be considered if the situation worsens.
Responding, Tehran said the statement failed to acknowledge what it called foreign-backed violence linked to the unrest, insisting that some demonstrations were infiltrated by groups seeking to destabilise the country. The Foreign Ministry maintained that Iranian security agencies were acting within the law to protect public order and national sovereignty.

Iran also criticised G7 countries for, in its words, overlooking human rights violations in other parts of the world, particularly in the Middle East, while using the issue as a tool to pressure Tehran.
The latest exchange highlights ongoing tensions between Iran and Western powers, as diplomatic relations remain strained over issues ranging from human rights and sanctions to regional security and Iran’s domestic political situation.
