Hypertension: The silent killer, by Falmata Maaji Muhammad

Story by Falmata Maaji Muhammad (Student at Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt)

High blood pressure (hypertension) is something we hear about often. But why is it called the silent killer?

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 1.4 billion people worldwide live with hypertension, that’s 1 in 3 adults. Sadly, only 1 in 4 manage to keep it under control.

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension means the force of blood against your artery walls is too high.
• Normal: below 130/80 mmHg
• High: 130–140 mmHg or more (systolic/ higher number) OR 80–90 mmHg or more (diastolic/lower number)

Why “Silent killer”?

Most people feel nothing at all when their blood pressure rises. But very high levels can cause:
Headaches, blurred vision, chest pain, and confusion. If untreated, hypertension can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, heart failure, and even dementia.

Causes

Hypertension can result from:
• Family history (genetics)
• Excess salt intake
• Kidney or hormone problems
• Sleep apnea
• Certain medications
• Pregnancy

Salt and Hypertension

Doctors often advise reducing salt intake. Why?
Too much salt makes the body retain water and increases blood volume. This puts extra strain on the heart and raises blood pressure. Moderation is key.

How to Manage It

• Eat Smart and Healthy: Citrus fruits, berries, bananas, prunes, melons, spinach, dark chocolate, tofu, and karkade (zobo/hibiscus tea) help lower BP.
• Move Daily: Walk at least 30 minutes a day or engage in other physical activities.
• Sleep & Relax: Aim for 8 hours of sleep and manage stress levels by meditation, prayer or yoga.

Takeaway
Hypertension is common but preventable. Check your blood pressure regularly, eat healthy, stay active, and cut down on salt. Small lifestyle changes can save lives.
