Buni’s 7-Year Legacy: Yobe SSG lists gains in education, health, security, infrastructure, others

Story by Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

As part of activities marking the seventh anniversary of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration, Yobe State Secretary to the Government, Dr Mohammad Goje, has highlighted landmark achievements recorded in education, agriculture, environmental sustainability, security, and infrastructure.

Briefing journalists in Damaturu on Friday, May 29, 2026, under the theme “Seven Years of Continuity, Consolidation and Transformational Leadership,” Dr Goje described education as the most strategic investment for the state’s future.

He noted that the administration has built Seven Mega Schools and Seven Model Schools across Damaturu, Potiskum, Gashua, Nguru, Geidam, Dapchi, and Buni Yadi, equipped with modern classrooms, laboratories, and ICT facilities.

Tertiary education received a boost with the College of Integrated Sciences (temporary site), expanded facilities at the College of Nursing and Midwifery, and the Clinical Section at Yobe State University Teaching Hospital.

He explained that at the Yobe State University, the Biotechnology Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) was constructed.

Technical and vocational training was strengthened at Mai Idriss Alooma Polytechnic, Geidam, and CAMTECH Potiskum.

“Special attention to girl-child education saw the establishment of the Government Girls Day Science and Technical College, Gashua, and Government Girls Senior Day Secondary School, Nguru. Over 48,000 students currently benefit from government scholarships,” said the SSG.

On agriculture, Dr Goje said Governor Buni convened a historic Agricultural Summit in 2019 and adopted the state’s first comprehensive Agricultural Policy. Key interventions include 7,500 metric tonnes of NPK fertiliser distributed at subsidised rates, 1,500 metric tonnes for irrigation farming, 40 Massey Ferguson tractors for mechanisation, Ruga settlements, and an Animal Research Institute along Potiskum Road.

In environmental sustainability, he said Buni’s administration executed the Damaturu Waterway Project, constructed culverts in Ngalda, and reconstructed the Alagarno Flood Control Gate to mitigate flooding and build climate resilience.

On security, the SSG disclosed the procurement of over 200 motorcycles and 60 patrol vehicles for security agencies, rehabilitation of military barracks, training of over 100 officials at the Defence Intelligence College and NIPSS, and support for families of fallen heroes.

Infrastructure development includes the ongoing Damaturu Flyover and Underpass Bridge, dualisation of the 26-km Damaturu–Kalallawa Road, and township roads across all senatorial zones, linking major farming and commercial communities.

Dr Goje concluded that through these strategic investments, Yobe State has emerged as a model of resilience, prudent leadership, and purposeful governance under Governor Buni.
