Lampard was livid in the first half of Wednesday night’s thrilling 5-3 victory for Liverpool when the champions were awarded a soft free-kick after Mateo Kovacic had appeared to win the ball.

Trent Alexander-Arnold ruthlessly dispatched the resulting set-piece to double Liverpool’s lead at the time, though Chelsea very nearly got back into the match in the second half in a pulsating, end-to-end contest.

In his post-match interview, Lampard suggested Liverpool’s bench had been a little ‘too arrogant’ on the touchline and now fresh footage from above the dugouts has explained why he was so upset.

The Chelsea boss took umbrage with Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders speaking to the fourth official, telling him that it was not a foul from Kovacic and to ‘sit down’.

Klopp then got annoyed with Lampard, wagging his finger and telling him not to speak to his coach in such a manner, but the Chelsea boss continued to rage at Lijnders as Klopp could be heard saying, ‘Calm down, calm down’.

Just as Lampard seemed to be walking away, Liverpool’s other assistant, Peter Krawietz, then stoked things further by shouting, ‘Clear foul’.

Lampard responded immediately: ‘It’s not a f***ing foul. I’m not asking you. Shut up. Shut up!’ Klopp can then be heard shouting very loudly at Lampard, to which the Chelsea boss replied: ‘F*** off you as well.’ The Liverpool bench could be heard chuckling as the two benches rowed, though there was an audible, collective gasp when Lampard threw out one last barb.

‘The only title you’ve ever won and you’re f***ing giving it the big un, f*** off!’ shouted the Chelsea boss, which annoyed Liverpool’s squad in the stands and backup keeper Adrian can be heard saying, ‘No, no, calm, calm’.

Lampard then tells Klopp to tell his staff to ‘have some respect and sit down’, with the situation finally appearing to be defused – though when Alexander-Arnold netted from the free-kick, Lijnders was practically on the pitch celebrating.

The Chelsea manager played down the altercation afterwards, telling Sky Sports: “I’ve got no problem with Jurgen Klopp. He’s managed this team and it’s fantastic.

“Some of the benches, it’s a fine line between when you’re winning – and they’ve won the league, fair play to Liverpool football club.

“But also don’t get too arrogant with it. That was my thing. But done. That’s it. It matters when you get emotional and that was it.”
