In a response to an appeal letter written by one Ahmed Haruna Daya to the Governor of Yobe State, His Excellency, Honourable Mai Mala Buni and published by Neptune Prime, the state’s commissioner of basic education, Dr Muhammad Sani, has put to rest the concerns raised by the writer.
In an exclusive chat with our reporter, the honourable commissioner revealed that Governor Buni has already taken steps to better the quality of education for the state’s students.
“You see,” he said, “apart from the declaration of State of Emergency in the education sector which you know he did on his inauguration, and it is the principle driving his vision on education reforms…the governor had, even before our appointment (as commissioners) already commissioned a consultant who will oversee the improvement of our state’s education method”.
Dr Sani also said if not that the issue of Covid-19 has slowed down a lot of things, “by now the three special STEM schools he has approved of would have started functioning. He said the schools will emphasize STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and that every student will be equipped with necessary skills before completing secondary education.
The commissioner disclosed that the governor laments a situation where people “who go through our schools cannot stand on their feet” and therefore every student will be expected to be able to be proficient in hand skills “like carpentry, tailoring, motor repairs, electronics, etc”.
He also said that already principals of all secondary schools in the state have been enlightened on this development “as the governor’s intention is not for such policy to remain with just three schools but for it to be universal”.
Only time will reveal or tell, because government is always good in introducing policies obviously, but the implementation of the policies is the problem. May God save our future leaders, ie our children.
