NDLEA Raises The Alarm Over Women's Escalating Drug Abuse

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA, Kano command, has expressed its dismay over the continuous phenomenal rise in the number  of women resorting to the  consumption of hard drugs in the state.
The commandant of the command, Umar Hamza said statics at the disposal of the anti drug war agency indicates that there is a monumental rise in the number of women who have taken to the habit of consuming hard drugs in the state, adding that, the alarming rate at which women are getting involved in drug abuse in various part of the state, calls for immediate action.
He said most worrisome is the lack of facility to rehabilitate  repentant female  addicts, saying the spacious rehabilitation center which can disjointedly accommodate both men and women within the premises remains uncompleted for several years, while the temporary centre is not adequate for men who are voluntarily patronizing the agency  for rehabilitation.
Umar said the use of ruthless force would not result to curbing the menace of drug abuse in the country.
He stated that, don of uniforms and being armed with guns cannot  serve as the sole route through which the fight against  dangerous and hard drugs  could be attained , adding that, religious institution have a crucial role to play in the war against drug abuse.
Umar, while receiving a delegate of the youth wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Kano State chapter in his office, on Airport road, said advocacy and courtesy visits by religious groups  to the command will strengthen the bond between both bodies, stating that, the command  in staging its operations is in lust for  support from religious and non governmental bodies.
He described the visit as first of its kind, urging religious organisations to emulate same.
He appealed to the state government and philanthropists to aid the completion of the center, adding that  conquering drug abuse would assist in curbing other social vices such as terrorism, reckless driving and rape among others.
Earlier in his  remark, Vice President ,CAN youth wing, Kano chapter , Mr Amao Joseph Adeeyo, said the familiarization visit was to seek for a platform for synergy  to enable  Christian youths  in the state  participate in the agency’s activities to complement its effort in the fight against drug abuse in the state.
