Story from Kenneth AFOR, Lagos
Arsenal striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on Tuesday has signed a three-year contract extension with the club till 2023.
The new deal is worth £250,000-a-week with an added performance-related bonuses almost double his previous pay of £180,000 per week.
This comes after weeks of speculations over his future at the club due to delay from management in agreeing for a pay rise after facing a turbulent financial crisis which led to 55 staff been laid off as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Gabonese international joined the club from Borussia Dortmund in 2018 for £56 million, he has scored 72 goals in 111 appearances for the club.
“Signing for this special club was never in doubt. It’s thanks to our fans, my team-mates, my family and everybody at this club that I feel like I belong here. I believe in Arsenal. We can achieve big things together. We have something exciting here and I believe the best is to come for Arsenal,” said Aubameyang.
Coach Mikel Arteta says his contract extension is important for the club adding that Aubameyang can reach to the height of his career with the club.
“It was important for Pierre-Emerick to stay with us. He’s a superb player with an incredible mentality. Being the player to have taken the least amount of time to reach 50 goals with this club tells you everything you need to know about him and his way of working.
“He’s an important leader for the team and a big part of what we’re building. He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. He can achieve that here,” he said.
