Wema Bank Manager who stole N9.2 million gets bail

The transaction service team manager for Wema Bank Plc, Ajah branch, Mr Johnson Akpata, 36, was on Tuesday granted bail by the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on a two-count charge bordering on alteration and falsifying ATM records and allegedly stealing the sum of N9,290,785.

According to the management of the bank, who informed the Nigeria Police Force at Lion Building Division, Lagos Island which led to his arrest, Mr Akpata was supposed to deposit the money into the bank’s account number 0123015695, adding that the accused betrayed the trust reposed on him.

Police Counsel, Chinedu Njoku told the court in charge of case NO b/30/2020 that the accused committed the offence between 14 February 2020 and 29 June 2020 at the Ajah Wema Bank branch, Ajah, Lagos.

Also, the counsel informed the court that the accused betrayed the trust reposed in him by his employer for the crime he has committed, adding that the crimes committed were contrary to and punishable under sections 287(7) and 336 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The second count against Mr Akpata reads: “that you, Johnson Akpata between 17 July 2020 and 22 July 2020, while working with Wema Bank Plc did alter and satisfy the records of Wema Bank ATM reconciliation for ATM 2 & 3.”

Mr Akpata, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was granted bail by Chief Magistrate A.O Komolafe of the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum, one of whom must own a landed property in Lagos State.

Komolafe adjourned the case till 19 October 2020 and ordered that the defendant be kept at the Lion Building Division in compliance to the COVID-19 directives till he fulfils the bail conditions.

Mr Akpata is a native of Kogi State and a resident of Little Saint Avenue, Sea Side Estate, Badore, Ajah, Lagos.
