A building collapsed in Obalende area of Lagos Island on Sunday, killing seven persons and leaving others badly injured.

The three-storey building located at 62 Odo Street was under construction when it collapsed and the cause of the collapse was not yet known.

Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that seven dead bodies had been removed from the collapsed building so far.

He said 10 people with minor injuries were treated and discharged while another 10 with severe injuries were transferred to the hospital for treatment.

“Twenty people have been extricated alive by the LASEMA Response Team and other stakeholders, and transferred to the hospital by LASEMA paramedics for further medical attention at Lagos Island General Hospital.

“Seven people (six males and one female) were recovered dead. Joint responders are working on the site with agency equipment on the ground.

“The Agency wishes to bring to the attention of the public that the building, in fact, had been sealed by LASBCA and the owner had commenced clandestine operations early hours of Sunday morning.

“These illegal activities directly led to this unfortunate incident which has led to the loss of lives and multiple injuries,” Osanyintolu said.
