Abubakar D. Aliyu

Eng. Abubakar Ali

Deputy Governor Abubakar D. Aliyu has been Governor Ibrahim Gaidam’s Deputy for ten years. He recently received an award as the “most loyal Deputy Governor”, an appellation that was many times than one crowned on Governors Ganduje of Kano and Shinkafi when they were Deputy Governors.
An Engineer by profession, Abubakar Aliyu, a middle level civil servant came to limelight when his elder brother, late Mamman Ali, became the Yobe State Governor in 2007.
He had a meteoric rise in the service within the two years Mamman Ali held sway as governor and was in charge of almost all projects handled by the state Ministry of Works.

Rich by Yobe standard before he became the Deputy Governor, Engineer Abubakar Aliyu has some experience in the civil service and has a feel of what an executive governor can be.
Those rooting for him believe these qualities have amply qualified him to be Governor.
However, there are others who accuse him of arrogance and aloofness but concede he has lately started reaching out to people in his senatorial zone and at the same time working hard to line up his tribe of Ngizm behind him.
The Ngizm, arguably the most politically fused and focused ethnic group in Yobe whose support for a candidate is often decisive, are numerically strong in Potiskum and are spread across the other three Local Governments of Fika, Fune and Nangere that make up the deputy’s senatorial zone.

One of the challenges he will face is that most stakeholders in his party do not see him as one with the required capacity and mentality to govern a state with tribal plurality like Yobe. And perhaps this is why he is seen to be networking more towards becoming a senator.

Adamu Dala Dogo

Hon. Adamu Dala Dogo

He is in his second tenure as Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, where he has been since 1999. Not politically exposed and lacking serious statewide links, his best bet may be to continue as a member of the House of Assembly or go into party administration.

Shettima Mohammed Saleh

Architect Shettima Saleh

A successful Architect and a onetime commissioner in the state, he fell out with Governor Gaidam which made him join the Peoples Democratic Party and vied for his zone’s senatorial ticket on its platform. He was to later co-ordinate the gubernatorial ambition of the party’s flag bearer, Adamu Maina Waziri.
Politics, being a game in which friends can be interchanged since interests, which are permanent, can clash, he has made up with his ‘former’ friend, Governor Gaidam, and is now a respected member of the Governor’s All Peoples Congress.

He may not vie for the Governorship ticket of the party, but surely he would want to stage another bid for the senate because, apparently, he has been bitten by the bug.
