She may not be the first female Professor from Borno State and she may be. We will soon lay that issue to rest for you.
Professor Fanna Inna Abdurahman, first female Kanuri Professor from Borno was born in Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital and hails from Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.
She started her early Educational Career in Yerwa Central Primary School Maiduguri where she obtained her first School learning Certificate and then went on to Federal Government College, Owerri, in Imo State, where she had her West African School Certificate in 1980.
She obtained a Bsc in Chemistry in 1987 from University of Maiduguri and in 1992 obtained a Masters Degree in Organic Chemistry.
She rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 2011.
Professor Fanna has published over 120 papers in Local, National and International Peer Review Journals, one Monograph and four conference papers in organic /medical Chemistry and environmental analytical toxicology.
Professor Fanna has held various Academic and Administrative positions in the University amongst which were Head of Department of Chemistry, Lembir Board of Research, Jamal Conference, Fellow Institute of Chartered Chemistry of Nigeria among others.
She is currently Sub-Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Maiduguri.
Thus, Professor Fanna is:
1- The first Kanuri woman Head of Department
2- The first Kanuri woman Professor
3- The first Kanuri woman Sub Dean
4- And from today the first Kanuri woman Dean of Faculty.
She was the HOD of Chemistry for eight years and was the immediate past Sub Dean of the Faculty of Science. She is a member, steering committee of Borno State University. She is a Fellow of Chemical Society of Nigeria and Fellow Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, She is also a Medicinal Chemist.
Added to all the above, Professor Fanna is currently a Director, Center for Research and Innovation in the University.
In a ceremony organized by friends to celebrate her elevation to the rank of a professor on 5th June 2014 at the Elkanemi Hall of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Fanna said the attainment of success in any field of human endeavour requires teamwork, perseverance, prayers and above all hard work.
Explaining further, she said it is not only her effort that saw her through the ranks to that of a Professor but that of many people who played various roles in the course of her carrier. She therefore called on other women not to despair but to instead become more determined to aspire to reach the highest rank of their chosen carrier.
