In a dramatic twist, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Ita Ekpeyong less than 72 hours after immediate ex-boss of the SSS Lawal Daura was disgraced out of office.
Daura has in conjunction with NIA boss prevented the EFCC operatives from arresting Ekpenyong in 2017, a situation which nearly degenerated to a shootout between EFCC officials and officials of DSS/NIA who foiled the attempted arrest of Ekpenyong.
Thursday’s arrest of Ekpenyong by the EFCC became feasible as a result of Daura’s sack who is believed to be giving cover to the embattled ex-DG of SSS.
Reports indicated that Ekpenyong was arrested at his residence at No 46, Maman Nasir Street, Asokoro, Abuja, on Thursday afternoon when EFCC operatives, in a commando style, stormed his residence in three buses and some patrol vehicles accompanied by over 20 armed policemen.
The operatives reportedly turned the embattled ex-DG’s mansion upside down for over two hours before leaving at 3.20pm amidst speculations that no cash was recovered.
Sources told our correspondent that the acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, ordered the raid following a meeting with the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu and the new DSS boss, Matthew Seyifa, on Wednesday.
