Not more than nine persons were killed on Monday when some hoodlums suspected to be from the Eastern Security Network (ESN) invaded Ukpomachi Village, Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area, Anambra State.

This was confirmed in a statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga.

The actual cause of the invasion is still unknown according to the police as an investigation is still ongoing.

Also, the command said that the identities of those that died are yet to be known, adding that some other persons sustained injuries during the attack as property and livestock were destroyed.

According to the PPRO, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Monday Kuryas, had ordered immediate deployment of an operational and intelligence team to identify and apprehend the killers.

“A crack team of operatives of the command led by an assistant commissioner of police have visited the scene and conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the incidence.

“Normalcy has been restored to the area and adequate security put in place to forestall a similar occurrence.

“The assailants, said to be armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons, invaded the village in their numbers and attacked the residents, resulting in the death of nine persons whose identities are unknown,” DSP Ikenga said.

However, the police have urged residents of Anambra, particularly those living in the community to be calm, assuring them of the command’s resolve to get to the root of the incident.

It said that any resident(s) with credible information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits should not hesitate to see the police.
