As part of measures to achieve food security and eradicate hunger, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) commences arieal spray to mitigate the impacts of Quelea bird in Bauchi state.
The exercise which is the only effective means of destroying the birds that reproduce and destroy massively is carried out in twelve northern states in the country.
State Coordinator of the ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Daniel Abarshi and the Field Officer, Dr Tagwi James said the frequent occurrence of the infestation of these birds necessitates the intervention, they however advocate that other African countries should also implore the same gesture, because the birds are migrants in nature.

The experts also said the birds mostly infest crops like rice; millet and Sorghum and that they can destroy more than 10 hectres of farmland within minutes.
Speaking during the flag off state Director of Agriculture Bauchi state, Mohammed Saidu appreciates the gesture of the ministry adding that, 16 out of the 20 Local Government Areas of the Bauchi have this pest challenge.
Mohammed noted that the state ministry of Agriculture and Natural resources has identified Roosting sites of the birds and is giving the necessary support.
