LG Polls: Gov. Sule commends peaceful exercise in Nasarawa

Story from Ibraheem Hamza MUHAMMAD, Lafia

The Nasarawa State Governor, His Excellency, Abdullahi Sule has commended the people of the state for a peaceful exercise in the just concluded local government elections.

The Governor, who gave the commendation while speaking to journalists shortly after casting his vote at his home town at Gudi Motor Park 002 polling unit in Akwanga local government area, apologised to voters for the delay they experienced in conducting the elections in some parts of the state.

He blamed the delay on the logistics issue, as well as the antics of some unpatriotic citizens which disrupted the distribution of election materials while stressing that his administration is committed to conducting credible, free and fair elections.

Governor Sule commended the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) for their efforts towards the conduct of the exercise.

“We want to apologise to the people that came out to vote because if there are delays, it affects them morally,” he said.

Explaining why he voted at about 2 pm, Governor Sule said he deliberately refused to be given special consideration, while some polling units were experiencing delays in the conduct of the election.

Sule specifically instructed NASIEC to ensure that materials were distributed to other polling units before that of his polling unit.

The Governor confirmed that the council polls commenced around 11 am in some parts of the state, such as Nasarawa, Karu, Akwanga and Wamba local government areas.

He equally disclosed that four persons, including a chairmanship candidate of an opposition party, were arrested in Wamba local government area, for ballot box snatching.

The Governor further disclosed that the suspects have since been handed over to the police in Lafia, for proper investigation.

He emphasised that, in spite of attempts to disrupt the smooth conduct of the exercise by some disgruntled persons, his administration is committed to conducting free and fair elections, in order to satisfy the yearnings of the people to elect leaders at the third-tier of governance.
