Bauchi women receive leadership skills training

Story from Najibullahi ADAMU, Bauchi

The Women Wing of the Christians Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) in partnership with Fahimta Women and Youth Development Initiative (FAWOYDI) have over the weekend trained leaders of women groups in Bogoro local government area of Bauchi state on leadership.

The one-day training which was supported by Actionaid was meant to promote women’s active participation in all developmental activities in society.

The team leader of WOWICAN Bauchi state chapter Madam Gladys Mbami said plans are underway to expand the project to other communities in the state to achieve the desired results.

She said the project was conceived by Actionaid in view of the low rate of women in active politics and leadership.

According to her, the one-day training drew over 40 women leaders from Mwari and Gwaranga communities in Bogoro local government, urging the participants to pass the message to other women.

She added that the training would be replicated in other areas to ensure women’s active participation in all developmental activities

Also speaking, a facilitator at the training, Salami Kolawole, said the training was aimed at equipping women with necessary leadership skills and their rights to education, politics and other aspects of human endeavour.

In their comments, the participants who lamented harmful norms that impede women’s active participation in governance promised to step down the training to others.

Our correspondent reports that WOWICAN also paid an advocacy visit to the village head of Bogoro, Mr Nuhu Tafida, who made a commitment to support the project.
