The North East Development Commission (NEDC) office of the focal person Yobe State, is set to intervene in rebuilding structures destroyed by the insurgents across the state. The State Coordinator, Dr. Ali Ibrahim Abbas, disclosed this in Damaturu, during his assumption of office as the pioneer Focal Person/ State Coordinator.
Abbas said it was the responsibility of NEDC to intervene on the damages done on social infrastructures such as schools, markets, houses, shops, palaces and office buildings destroyed by the insurgents.
He said apart from rebuilding, resettlement, and rehabilitation of people and communities, the commission has intensified effort into looking at the immediate causes of these crises.
He said that issues such as illiteracy, poverty, and unemployment are still lingering and if not properly addressed have the potential to ignite another crisis.
He said one of the core mandates of his office was to ensure adequate security, adding that he would interface with the military, other securities outfits and the civilian population to achieve that.
“You recall whenever there was security or military operation we have backlash most of the time on the civilian population and sometimes the security agents do complain that people do not give them the maximum support they require from the communities,” he said.
He said the provision of quality education, effective health care delivery, and agriculture are the key indicators that will shape the main agenda of the commission.
He said the commission has already keyed into data collection of all the next-of-kin of persons who lost their lives due to the activities of the insurgents.
He urged his staff to be God-fearing in handling such challenging assignments not to get engaged in sentiments or corruption.
