A Coalition of Political Entities: Opportunities and challenges, by Engr. Bello Gwarzo Abdullahi, FNSE

Situation plays a pivotal role in shaping the political trajectory of a nation and in determining how it responds to governmental policies and their implementation.

This fundamental principle remains constant irrespective of the governing system in place. In a democratic context, reactions to policies frequently entail public deliberations, rigorous media scrutiny, and lobbying efforts by a myriad of interest groups. It is imperative for policymakers to grasp these dynamics in order to anticipate reactions and adapt their strategies accordingly.

However, in Nigeria, the current reality presents a starkly different narrative. Two years into the PBAT administration’s tenure, disillusionment is pervasive, resembling a lingering malaise, and the overall circumstances continue to deteriorate.

The hubris with which the APC pursues its ambition to transform Nigeria into a one-party state engenders a sense of disenchantment among the populace, diverting attention from pressing social and economic issues.

Nigerians have consistently demonstrated that the more a ruling party exhibits a sense of entitlement and monopolistic power, the more the opposition coalesces to counteract the party and its policies.

The authoritarian inclinations of President Bola Tinubu are cultivating an atmosphere of trepidation and stifling dissent within what ought to be a democratic framework. This prevailing predicament has precipitated a series of meetings among political parties aimed at forming coalitions.

The establishment of such coalitions presents a plethora of opportunities and challenges. Positively, by pooling their resources and expertise, coalitions can propose comprehensive policies that address various dimensions of issues, including education, healthcare, employment, and inclusivity. This collaborative endeavor would forge a united front in challenging the ruling party, creating a formidable platform for the opposition to incessantly pressure the government.

One notable advantage of political coalitions is the consolidation of resources and expertise from diverse entities, yielding a more potent collective voice and augmented influence. When parties with disparate strengths converge, they can leverage their respective advantages to advocate for reforms that benefit a broader segment of the populace. This synergy is particularly manifest when a coalition embodies a wide array of societal interests, such as labor unions, environmental organizations, and business associations converging to promote sustainable development policies.

Nevertheless, challenges are inescapable when disparate groups unite out of necessity. One principal challenge is maintaining cohesion among entities with divergent ideologies and priorities.

Each political faction will endeavor to advance its own agenda, necessitating effective communication and compromise to avert internal conflicts that could undermine the coalition’s objectives. Moreover, confronting a ruling party is no trivial task, as they will employ all means at their disposal to sow discord among the opposition.

Successfully navigating these opportunities and challenges demands adept communication, compromise, and negotiation skills. Ultimately, the efficacy of a political coalition hinges on its members’ capacity to collaborate towards a common vision while honoring each other’s differences.

This spirit of cooperation is vital for addressing intricate issues such as electoral misconduct, judicial impropriety, and funding challenges. Through such collaboration, political entities can exert a more significant impact and catalyze positive change within society.
