ABU Zaria refutes AI video linking It to nuclear weapons development
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has dismissed as false an AI-generated video alleging that the institution and Nigerian scientists were involved in developing nuclear weapons.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Malam Auwalu Umar, Director of the Public Affairs Directorate, the university described the circulating video as fabricated misinformation aimed at undermining Nigeria’s peaceful nuclear energy programme.
According to Umar, the video falsely claimed that Nigerian scientists secretly enriched weapons-grade uranium in Kaduna during the 1980s and that ABU researchers acquired centrifuge equipment from Pakistan’s AQ Khan network.

He stressed that the allegations were “baseless, unverified, and unscientific,” insisting that the content was deliberately created to cause panic and discredit the country’s research institutions.
Umar further clarified that most of the scientists at ABU’s Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) were studying abroad at the time and therefore could not have been involved in any uranium enrichment activities.
“Nigeria’s first nuclear reactor (NIRR-1) was established much later in 1996 under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation Programme and commissioned in 2004,” he explained.

The statement reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, in strict adherence to IAEA standards and global non-proliferation treaties.
