ADSW2025: Tinubu calls for inclusive climate action in Africa

Story by Kenneth AFOR

In a powerful address at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025 on Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasised the urgent need for Africa to embrace sustainable practices while addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

His speech, titled “From Climate Imperatives to Economic Prosperity: Bringing Africa Into the Future of Global Energy,” highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to leading the continent in sustainable development.

The President in his speech underscored the significance of the event. He reiterated that “resilience against the adverse effects of climate change is essential for safeguarding our African communities and economies, but sustainability must be inclusive.”

As Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, Nigeria recognises its pivotal role in shaping the continent’s response to climate challenges. President Tinubu outlined Nigeria’s strategic approach, which is anchored on three key pillars: Energy Transition, Climate Resilience, and Sustainable Development.

“Our challenges are global, and solutions will only be effective if we work together in the spirit of mutual respect and a shared future,” he asserted. “We are, therefore, working tirelessly and must do what we can to ensure that our policies promote equity and social justice, leaving no one behind.”

The President’s remarks come at a critical time as nations around the world grapple with the impacts of climate change. His call for collaboration and inclusivity resonates with the broader goal of the Sustainability Week, which aims to foster partnerships and innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

As the event continues, leaders and stakeholders from various sectors are expected to engage in discussions that align with President Tinubu’s vision of a sustainable and equitable future for Africa.
