Africa 1884: The scramble, the statue, and the start of a new era, by Freedom Chimereze

Today, let us hear through the records of history, a story of two gifts presented to the world in the pivotal year of 1884. While one gift symbolised freedom and unity, the other marked a chapter of division and discord.

In 1884, as Europe geared on the “Scramble for Africa”, nations vied for colonial dominance, carving up the African continent like a pie. Lines were drawn, not by the hands of those who called these lands home, but by distant powers seeking dominance and wealth.

Territories claimed, and sovereignty ignored, all in the pursuit of imperial glory. This era, known for its exploitation and oppression, left a lasting legacy of scars and struggles for the African people to this day.

Nevertheless, within this chaotic time, a different gift appeared, an emblem of hope and freedom, but not for Africans.

France gifted the Statue of Liberty to the United States, a symbol of freedom and enlightenment. This monumental gesture stood in stark contrast to the partitioning of Africa, highlighting the dichotomy of ideals in that era. Standing at a height of 305 feet, the Statue of Liberty, with her torch held high, welcomed immigrants to the shores of New York, embodying the principles of democracy and inclusivity.

Meanwhile, sitting at the Berlin Conference organised by the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, ancient European powers employed various tactics to assert control, to acquire, and to regulate African territories. Africa, thus, faced the consequences of these arbitrary borders, cultural fragmentation, and economic exploitation, sowing seeds of division that endure to this very day.

But let us not dwell solely on the painful past, for history is but a teacher guiding us towards a brighter future.

Today, the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) is blooming. AfCFTA is not just an agreement; it is a symbol of hope. By breaking down barriers to trade, fostering collaboration, and promoting inclusive growth, #AfCFTA heralds a new era of opportunity and progress for Africa and the world.

Together, let us build bridges, not borders; foster cooperation, not conflict; and create a future where the gifts of history inspire unity and prosperity for all.

Thank you for your attention, and may our shared journey towards a better world continue with courage, compassion, and conviction. A world where women and children will never go to bed hungry is possible.
