African Union strongly condemns failed coup attempt in Niger

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, strongly condemned the recent coup attempt in Niger on Wednesday.

The commission issued a statement expressing its deep displeasure with the development.

According to reports, soldiers from the presidential guard had blocked access to the residence of Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum.

This was the fourth coup attempt in Niger since gaining independence from France in 1960.

The statement from Mahamat emphasized that the actions of certain members of the military were an attempt to undermine the stability of democratic and republican institutions in Niger, amounting to an attempted coup d’état.

He stressed that these actions were a betrayal of their republican duty.

The AU Chairperson urged the military to immediately cease these unacceptable actions.

Additionally, Mahamat called upon the people of Niger and neighboring countries, particularly those in ECOWAS, along with the international community, to unite in unanimous condemnation of the coup attempt.

He also demanded the immediate and unconditional return of the rogue soldiers to their barracks.
