Alleged N37.1million Fraud: EFCC grants bail to former Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) extensively questioned the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouk, for over 12 hours regarding the alleged ₦37,170,855,753.44 fraud.

The interrogation took place at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, with Sadiya Umar-Farouk accompanied by her lawyer, Oladipo Okpeseyi.

During the session, Sadiya Umar-Farouk was requested to provide a statement detailing her connection with contractor James Okwete and the disbursement of the aforementioned sum through ministry-affiliated agencies.

Documents presented during the interrogation unveiled the movement of funds into various accounts linked to Okwete.

Following the questioning, Sadiya was released on bail around 11.30 pm, with instructions to report to the commission daily.

The ongoing investigation involves scrutinising the flow of funds from the ministry to Okwete’s accounts.

Okwete, who had been released on administrative bail earlier, was confirmed to report daily to the EFCC.

The investigation revealed Okwete’s involvement in transferring funds to Bureau De Change Operators, making cash withdrawals, purchasing luxury cars, and acquiring properties in Abuja and Enugu.

Additionally, 53 companies connected to Okwete were identified, securing Federal Government contracts totaling N27,423,824,339.86.

Sadiya Umar-Farouk’s presence at the EFCC Headquarters was publicly acknowledged via a tweet around 10:20 am on Monday.

The investigation continues, and both individuals are expected to cooperate with the ongoing inquiries.
