An open letter to the good people of Gombe State, by Dr. Tukur Madu Yemi
Commending His Excellency, the Executive Governor, for tansformative leadership
Dear People of Gombe State,
I write to you not as a politician or someone with any political affiliation but as a scholar, a lecturer at the Federal University of Kashere, and a concerned citizen who has keenly observed the remarkable strides in development unfolding in our beloved state under the leadership of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Gombe State.
In recent years, Gombe has experienced unprecedented growth, particularly in infrastructure, public facilities, and other critical sectors. Historically, our state faced significant developmental challenges; however, today, it is recognized as one of the fastest-growing states in the region. This transformation is a testament to visionary leadership, meticulous planning, and an unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the people of Gombe.
Understanding Development and Strategic Priorities
It is imperative to acknowledge that no government can address all societal challenges simultaneously. Sustainable development necessitates a phased and strategic approach—beginning with pressing priorities before transitioning to long-term projects that yield widespread socio-economic benefits.
A well-developed road network is a fundamental driver of economic growth. The expansion of road infrastructure within Gombe metropolis, particularly in the Gombe Government Reserved Area (GRA) and its extension, has significantly improved mobility, facilitated commercial activities, and enhanced the state’s attractiveness to investors.
The benefits of these roads extend beyond mere connectivity; they contribute to the broader economic advancement of Gombe by linking communities and fostering business expansion.
Another noteworthy achievement is the construction of the modern Government House, which not only enhances administrative efficiency but also projects an image of professionalism and organizational excellence. A well-structured government office fosters effective governance and signals the state’s dedication to institutional development.
Furthermore, the relocation of multiple city parks into a centralized, modern transport hub has been a progressive initiative. Previously, scattered parks contributed to traffic congestion and urban disorder. The establishment of a centralized park has streamlined transportation within Gombe, significantly reducing congestion while enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the city.
Ongoing Projects and the Future of Gombe
Beyond completed projects, several transformative initiatives are currently underway, poised to further shape the socio-economic landscape of the state:
The new State Secretariat, presently under construction, is designed to provide a modern and efficient workspace for government employees. This development will enhance administrative productivity and service delivery, ultimately benefiting the general populace.
The proposed first-ever flyover at the main entrance of Gombe town is expected to mitigate traffic congestion, improve road safety, and contribute to the visual appeal of the city.
A modern abattoir, earmarked for construction along Mallam Sidi Road, is intended to revolutionize meat processing in the state. This facility will ensure hygienic and efficient slaughtering and packaging, significantly enhancing food safety while creating business opportunities for butchers, livestock traders, and food vendors. This project will also strengthen the agricultural value chain, fostering economic growth in the livestock sector.
Key Areas for Further Development
While infrastructure development forms the backbone of economic transformation, it is crucial for the government to extend its focus to other essential sectors that directly impact the well-being of the people. These include:
Healthcare Advancement: Expanding hospital infrastructure, establishing additional healthcare centers in underserved areas, and equipping medical facilities with cutting-edge technology will significantly improve the quality of healthcare services.
Education and Human Capital Development: Increased investment in primary, secondary, and tertiary education, alongside the promotion of vocational training, will equip the youth with the requisite skills to thrive in a competitive economy.
Youth and Women Empowerment: Encouraging entrepreneurship, facilitating access to finance, and implementing targeted skill acquisition programs will enhance economic independence among young people and women, thereby reducing unemployment and fostering inclusive growth.
Water Supply and Sanitation: Expanding access to clean potable water and improving sanitation infrastructure will enhance public health outcomes and overall living standards.
The Strategic Importance of Infrastructure
Some may question why the government has prioritized infrastructure over other pressing needs such as education, healthcare, and employment generation. The answer lies in the foundational role of infrastructure in sustainable development.
A robust infrastructural framework—comprising well-constructed roads, administrative complexes, and efficient transport systems—serves as a catalyst for progress in all other sectors. Without such an enabling environment, the delivery of quality education, healthcare, and employment opportunities would be significantly constrained.

That said, while acknowledging these remarkable infrastructural developments, I encourage His Excellency to sustain and expand his commitment to road infrastructure, particularly in areas within Gombe metropolis that require urgent attention. As part of the next phase of urban road expansion, I respectfully appeal for the extension of the road network to strategically important areas such as:
The road behind Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Doma, connecting to the bypass
Barunde and Dubai Quarters
These areas, which are vital to both residential and commercial activities, would greatly benefit from improved road access. An expanded road network in these locations would reduce traffic congestion, enhance urban mobility, and promote further economic growth, aligning with the government’s broader vision for an integrated and modern Gombe.
The Role of Citizens in Development
Development is a collective responsibility. While the government provides essential infrastructure and policy direction, it is incumbent upon citizens to make optimal use of these facilities, support progressive policies, and contribute positively to the state’s development. We must safeguard our roads, adhere to traffic regulations, maintain environmental cleanliness, and engage in constructive discourse that fosters progress.
To my fellow citizens, I urge us to recognize and appreciate the government’s efforts while also playing an active role in building a more prosperous Gombe. Constructive criticism is invaluable in governance, but indiscriminate negativity can impede progress. If we are genuinely committed to development, we must embrace positive change and actively support initiatives that enhance the well-being of present and future generations.

Once again, I extend my profound appreciation to His Excellency for his dedication to the socio-economic transformation of Gombe State. It is my sincere hope that his leadership will continue to usher in greater prosperity and sustainable development for our state. May Gombe continue to thrive, and may we all contribute meaningfully to its progress.
