Anambra Governorship Election: Police enforce total lockdown on vehicular movement

The Anambra State Police Command has announced a total restriction on vehicular movement across the state ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025.
According to the Command, the restriction will take effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day and will cover all routes within and outside the state, including major highways linking Anambra to neighbouring states.
In a statement issued in Awka on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the decision followed a security meeting held at the State Police Headquarters on November 5.

He explained that the measure was taken to prevent the movement of political thugs and criminal elements that might attempt to disrupt the electoral process, while also ensuring the safety of lives and property.
The restriction, he noted, applies to all categories of vehicles private cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, tricycles, motorcycles, and shuttle buses.
However, exemptions will be made for specific groups, including officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accredited journalists and election observers, medical personnel, emergency responders, and essential service providers.

SP Tochukwu stressed that all exempted individuals must carry valid identification and official clearance tags to avoid being stopped or detained by security operatives.
He appealed to residents and motorists to comply strictly with the directive, describing it as a proactive measure aimed at ensuring a peaceful, credible, and violence-free election.
“This arrangement is not punitive. It is meant to safeguard lives and property, maintain public order, and allow voters to freely exercise their right to choose their preferred candidate,” Tochukwu stated.

He also urged voters to remain law-abiding and cooperate fully with security personnel who will be deployed across the 21 local government areas of the state.
In addition, the police advised interstate travellers to make alternative travel plans or use routes outside Anambra during the restriction period to avoid inconvenience.
SP Tochukwu reaffirmed the Command’s readiness to provide adequate security before, during, and after the election, assuring residents of swift response to any security threat in collaboration with other security agencies.
