Argentina joins US in exiting WHO
Argentina will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) due to its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, a spokesman for right-wing populist President Javier Milei announced on Wednesday.
This decision follows closely on the heels of former President Donald Trump’s announcement on his first day of his second term that the United States would also exit the global health body.
“President Javier Milei has instructed Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein to begin the process of Argentina’s withdrawal from the WHO,” said government spokesman Manuel Adorni at a press briefing.
Similar to Trump’s stance, Milei’s representative expressed significant disagreements with the WHO’s response to the pandemic.
“We, as Argentines, will not allow any international organization to meddle in our sovereignty, especially when it comes to our health,” Adorni stated.
In 2020, Argentina implemented some of the strictest measures to control the spread of COVID-19, including long-lasting curfews. In many cases, people were only permitted to leave their homes for essential activities like shopping for necessities or attending medical appointments.
