Army advocates developmental journalism in addressing insecurity
The Commander of the 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Katsina State, Brigadier-General Babatunde Omopariola, has called for the prioritisation of developmental journalism to combat insecurity effectively.
Speaking during a luncheon with members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council, led by its Chairman, Tukur Den-Ali, Omopariola emphasised the critical role of the media in shaping public opinion and supporting military operations. The event, held at the Command’s Officer Mess in Katsina, was part of activities commemorating the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and aimed to foster a cordial relationship between journalists and the military.
“The luncheon was designed to create a relaxed environment for networking and active engagement between the media and the Nigerian Armed Forces,” Omopariola stated. “The media plays an increasing role in shaping public opinion, influencing military operations and galvanising public support in the information age.”
The Commander stressed the importance of embedding journalists in military operations to counter negative reporting and strengthen collaboration between the media and security agencies.

He urged journalists to uphold patriotism in their work, avoiding reports that could harm national security. “This season is a time for reflection, loyalty, and sacrifice. It reminds troops of their duty to justify the trust Nigerians place in them,” he added.
Omopariola paid tribute to fallen heroes, acknowledging their sacrifices for the nation and reaffirming the Brigade’s commitment to supporting the welfare of their families.
In his response, NUJ Chairman Tukur Den-Ali expressed gratitude for the warm reception and pledged the support of journalists in Katsina. He assured the Commander that the media would continue to partner with the Brigade and other security agencies to promote interagency cooperation and national security.
The event underscored the significance of collaboration between the military and the media in addressing security challenges and fostering a united front against insecurity.
