Army decorates first female infantry warrant officer, Hajara Egbunu
The Nigerian Army Women Command has celebrated a groundbreaking achievement with the promotion of Army Warrant Officer Hajara Egbunu, the first female soldier from the elite Infantry Corps to attain the prestigious rank.
Egbunu was decorated with her new rank badge by the Commander of the Nigerian Army Women Command, Brigadier General Mathias Amatso, during a ceremony held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at the Command Conference Room in Abuja.
In a statement released on Sunday, January 5, Lieutenant Maureen Ogbuka, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the Nigerian Army Women Command, lauded Egbunu’s “exceptional professionalism, dedication, and effectiveness.”
“Her promotion reflects her hard work and dedication,” Ogbuka noted, urging her to continue serving as a role model by upholding discipline and inspiring younger soldiers to align with the Nigerian Army’s core values.

Expressing her gratitude, Egbunu acknowledged God’s guidance and thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OO Oluyede, for his leadership and support, which she said had been pivotal in her career progression.
She also praised Brigadier General Amatso for his mentorship, which played a significant role in her effectiveness as the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the Command.
Egbunu’s achievement marks a historic moment in the Nigerian Army, inspiring future generations of female soldiers to aim for excellence in their military careers.
