Bandits kill 8, abduct scores in Katsina, forcing villagers to flee

Armed bandits have killed eight people and abducted scores in Kankara Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, forcing villagers to flee into nearby forests to escape the escalating violence.

Reports indicate that palpable tension gripped the area on Saturday as the bandits launched a series of attacks. A local source disclosed, “Earlier this morning, they (the bandits) drove off in one truck (pick-up), and now they’ve taken another full of people.”

Villagers have fled into the forests seeking safety, with some reportedly killed during the chaos. Sources also revealed that the abductors are currently leading their captives to hideouts as residents desperately continue to escape.

A credible source, speaking anonymously, stated, “Yesterday, the bandits killed one person at Gidan Damo, one at Gidan Umoru, and two others in Ungwan Mai Kawo. In Burdugau G, Malumfashi LGA, they killed one person and burned a car. Four others are currently hospitalised.”

The situation worsened on Saturday, particularly in Yargoje and Dankunuji, where the bandits killed one person, wounded several others, and abducted numerous residents. The attackers were last sighted in Gidan Boka, forcing their captives toward their hideouts.

The source attributed the attacks to a notorious kingpin known as Ba’baru of Gidan Gamji, who reportedly has a strong presence in Powa, Jeka, and Masalawa, operating under the Maidaki ward. He also expressed concern about the influx of bandits from neighbouring Zamfara State, intensifying the crisis in Kankara LGA.

Kankara remains one of the major hotspots for banditry in Katsina State. The Katsina Police Command has yet to confirm the incident as of the time of filing this report.
