Bobrisky will be held in male cell ward – Prison service

The Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) has announced that the popular cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, will be housed in the male section of the prison facility for the duration of his six-month sentence.

This decision comes following the sentencing of Bobrisky to six months’ imprisonment by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.

The sentence was handed down for the offense of naira mutilation, following charges brought against Bobrisky by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bobrisky, who was remanded to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, responded to the judge’s inquiry about his sex by affirming, “I am a man.” Consequently, the NCoS spokesperson stated, “Since he admitted to being a male in court, then we have to abide by what was submitted in court.”

The sentencing, without the option of a fine, commenced on March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest. Justice Awogboro emphasized the importance of deterring others from similar acts of currency abuse and mutilation.

Bobrisky’s conviction on April 5, after pleading guilty to four counts of naira abuse, marked a significant legal development. Despite Bobrisky’s controversial gender identity, including claims of undergoing surgeries to change gender and statements about readiness to bear a child, the court proceedings shed light on the legal status upheld in the judicial system.

As Bobrisky begins his prison term, this case continues to spark discussions around gender identity, legal repercussions for financial crimes, and the implications of social media influence on legal proceedings in Nigeria.
