Boko Haram raid kills 2 soldiers, forces others to flee to Cameroon

Two Nigerian soldiers were killed and others fled across the border to Cameroon after a Boko Haram attack on a military base in Borno State.

According to military sources quoted by Sahara Reporters, suspected militants stormed the army’s CIO Battalion base in the Rann area of the Kala Balge district early Monday.

During the brutal assault, the terrorists reportedly set armored tanks on fire and stole an unspecified amount of ammunition. “There was another Boko Haram dislodgement on our base in Borno,” a military source said.

“The CIO Battalion in Rann, Kala Balge was attacked by them, they killed two of our soldiers and injured many others.” The source added that some soldiers “who managed to escape left their duty post and fled with their arms into our neighboring country, Cameroon.”

This attack comes just a few months after 22 soldiers, including a commander, were killed at a military base in Malam-Fatori in the Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State.

Nigeria has been fighting the insurgency in the North-East since 2009. While the military has consistently claimed the terrorists are largely defeated, reports of casualties and setbacks continue to emerge.

These attacks have claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions, particularly in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states. Soldiers have repeatedly voiced concerns about inadequate weaponry, accusing their superiors of leaving them vulnerable against better-armed insurgents.
