Borno: Governor Zulum swears in housing committee in Maiduguri

Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno state on Wednesday inaugurated the committee for the construction of 500 Housing Estate in Maiduguri, at the Government House, Maiduguri.

Governor Zulum said “the provision of comfortable and affordable houses to the citizenry is a cardinal philosophy of this administration. That we will pursue this with all commitment is amply demonstrated by this event of the inauguration of the committee for the construction of 500 housing Estate in Maiduguri”.

” As a result of the great importance I attached to this project, the committee is to be headed by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur. thus strategy will ensure effective supervision and quick completion of the project we have the vision of gradual development of all our urban centers in the state and provision of better housing for the civil servants and urban residents “, the governor added.

He said ” I have made all arrangements with the Family Homes Nigeria for the take-off of 1.700 Urban Housing and 3,200 Rural Housing in the state. We are exploring public-private partnership arrangements to complement Government efforts in this regard”.

The Governor also approved the sales of 2,787 houses in five government estates, to persons who were allocated the houses by successive administrations.

The Governor announced that he had approved the recommendation of a different committee, to begin the sale of 2,787 houses made up of the 1,000 and 777 housing estates, the 505, 303 and 202 estates on owner-occupier basis, meaning those living in the houses will be made pay a sum after which they fully own the houses. Under the existing conditions, the houses belong to the state government while those allocated the houses pay annual rents to the government.

My predecessor has amply demonstrated commitment towards the provision of affordable housing targeted at low/middle-level income households in urban/rural centers and the reconstruction of ravaged communities” Zulum said.
