Boxing legend George Foreman places Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder among the grades of his iconic era

Boxing icon George Foreman believes the current kingpins of heavyweight boxing would comfortably fit into his legendary era.

Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and Deontay Wilder are widely regarded as the best of the current generation, which is often compared to the seventies.

“They are very good boxers,” Foreman told talkSPORT.

“Wilder proved he could knock a guy out that he’d already knocked out before.

“Joshua proved that he can get up off the canvas, act like a gentleman, put his team together and win it all again.

“Fury, to be out for so long and go 12 rounds with the heavyweight champion of the world, these are magnificent fighters.

“They could’ve existed in any era.”

The heavyweight division in the seventies was dominated by Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman, each with their own unique style.

Ali’s fights with the other two were often depicted as a battle of skill vs raw power.

Foreman packed devastating knockout power, like Wilder, while Ali was renowned for his boxing brain, perhaps more like Fury.

And Foreman believes Joshua showed he can now do both following his dominant points victory over Andy Ruiz Jr last weekend. “Not only is he a good fighter and a champion, but he’s also a pure boxer,” Foreman added.

“He’s a puncher and he’s got a lot of knockouts to prove that, but the man is now labeled boxer/puncher.

“He’s put the whole package together now and I was more than impressed.”
