Bread producers threaten nationwide strike over cost of baking materials

Due to rising cost of baking items in the market, the Bakers Association of Nigeria has threatened to shut down production of bread if their demands are not met within two weeks.

Briefing newsmen in Owerri, Imo State capital at the weekend, the State Chairman of the association, Chief Osmond Nkoma on behalf of the national body said this has become necessary following several appeals to the Federal Government to help in bringing down the cost of bread production.

The bakers further listed their demands to include liberalisation of flour and sugar importation, reduction of import duties on major baking materials.

They also demanded the provision of concessionary forecast exchange of flour millers, reduction of tariff on imported wheat, sugar and introduction of tax holidays.

The association revealed that these have been the reason for the increment of the commodity in recent times in the country.
