Brothers kill sibling, bury corpse in shallow grave over alleged burglary
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects for the gruesome murder and burial of their brother in a shallow grave in Oko community, Orumba North Local Government Area.
Speaking during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Awka on Monday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, disclosed that the suspects, Chidiebere Okeke and his cousin, Emebo Ogochukwu, were apprehended for killing their brother, Chibuzor Okeke.
“The deceased, late Chibuzor Okeke, was accused of burglary and stealing. His brother, Chidiebere Okeke, and his cousin, Emebo Ogochukwu, caught him and beat him to a stupor. As a result, Chibuzor became unconscious and was rushed to the hospital, where the doctor confirmed him dead,” said Itam.
In an attempt to cover up the crime, the suspects buried Chibuzor’s body in a shallow grave within their compound.
CP Itam also revealed the rescue of four children allegedly stolen from their parents in Bauchi State and trafficked to Anambra. Four suspects, including an illegal foster mother, were arrested in connection with the crime.
“The suspects confessed to the crime and narrated the role each of them played. One of the children has been identified, and efforts are already underway to reunite the child with his parents,” Itam added.
He appealed to the public to assist in identifying the other rescued children by sharing their photographs for reunification with their families.
In another development, a joint operation by the Nigeria Police Force, Military, Civil Defence, and Anambra Vigilante operatives dismantled a criminal camp in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, on December 24, 2024.
The operation, based on credible intelligence, led to the destruction of makeshift structures, the recovery of 19 unexploded improvised explosive devices, and significant injuries inflicted on fleeing suspects.
On December 7, 2024, the police anti-cultism squad raided a known black spot in Umunaga Village, Awka South Local Government Area, arresting two suspects, Okechukwu Chinwuko (27) and Ezenwa Chinedu (22). The raid resulted in the seizure of a pump-action gun, four live cartridges, cutlasses, criminal charms, and suspected hard drugs.

Two female victims, who had been sexually abused by the suspects, were also rescued during the operation.
Similarly, on December 6, 2024, the Special Anti-Cultism Squad arrested an 18-year-old suspect, Miracle Mwakalor, in possession of an AK47 rifle and a magazine. The arrest disrupted a planned criminal operation in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area, and led to the recovery of the weapon hidden in an apartment in Ubuofu, Awka.
CP Nnaghe Itam reiterated the command’s commitment to combating crime in Anambra State and ensuring the safety of residents. He commended the collaborative efforts of security agencies and called for public support in providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing operations.
