Buhari left Nigerian economy in a mess – Shettima
Vice President Kashim Shettima has acknowledged that President Bola Tinubu inherited an economy in disarray from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking at the launch of a book titled ‘Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria’, authored by Professor Modupe Adelabu, a retired professor of Educational Administration from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Shettima admitted that the previous administration, of which he was a part, left behind significant economic challenges.
Shettima emphasised that despite their association with the Buhari administration, the Tinubu government is determined to address the country’s economic difficulties.
He urged Nigerians to rally behind President Tinubu as he works to address the nation’s socio-political, economic, and security issues.

“In President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have a leader that we can invest our trust in. I’m not playing politics; I’m speaking from the heart. I have seen the soul of Bola Tinubu, and he has a good soul,” Shettima said.
“He means well for the nation. He wants to live in a place of glory. He is not in power to engage in primitive capital accumulation.
He is in power to leave landmarks in the sands of time. He is the most demonised politician in Nigeria.”
Reflecting on Tinubu’s lifestyle, Shettima shared an anecdote about his first visit to Tinubu’s residence in Bourdillon, Lagos.
He noted that, contrary to expectations, Tinubu’s home was modest, even less luxurious than his own in Maiduguri.
He added that Tinubu’s unpretentious lifestyle and focus on governance, rather than personal wealth, should inspire Nigerians to support him.
“The first time I went to his house at Bourdillon, I was looking forward to seeing a mansion comparable to Buckingham Palace, with gardens, and swimming pools, but there was nothing special about that house.
My house in Maiduguri is better than the house in Bourdillon,” Shettima recounted. “Since I have known him, he has been using only one wristwatch, and in fact, I dress better than him.”
Shettima also took the opportunity to criticise political opponents, such as Atiku Abubakar and supporters of Peter Obi, for playing politics with serious national issues like the removal of the fuel subsidy.
He stressed that while the economy inherited by the Tinubu administration was indeed in a “huge mess,” the focus should now be on finding solutions rather than assigning blame.
“We knew there were challenges. Forget about the politics being played by Atiku Abubakar and the obedient crowd; they all said they were going to withdraw the fuel subsidy,” Shettima concluded.
