  • FCTA, FCDA offices shut as workers begin indefinite strike over welfare issues Activities at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) were brought to a halt on Monday as workers commenced an indefinite strike to press home demands over unresolved welfare and labour issues. The strike action, declared by the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC), led to the shutdown of the FCTA/FCDA Secretariat in Abuja, with workers locking the main gates and withdrawing their services across ministries, departments, agencies, parastatals and area councils within the Federal Capital Territory. Union leaders said the decision followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to management, accusing the authorities of failing to address long-standing grievances. Among the issues raised are the non-payment of promotion arrears, stalled promotions, alleged irregularities in promotion examinations, unpaid wage awards, and the failure to remit pension and National Housing Fund deductions. The unions also protested the continued extension of service for retired directors and permanent secretaries, as well as poor working conditions and inadequate welfare provisions for staff. Security personnel were deployed to the secretariat to maintain order as workers vowed to sustain the strike until their demands are met. JUAC leaders insisted that no official duties would resume unless the FCTA and FCDA management engage meaningfully with the unions and implement agreed resolutions. The shutdown is expected to disrupt key administrative and public services in Abuja, including revenue-related activities and approvals requiring FCTA or FCDA processing. As of the time of filing this report, the FCTA and FCDA authorities had yet to issue an official response to the strike action or announce plans for dialogue with the unions.
