Catholic Diocese flags off 20,000 tree planting exercise in Adamawa

Story from Usman IBRAHIM, Yola

The Catholic Diocese of Yola, Adamawa State has commenced the planting of 20,000 trees across its diocese in the state to cushion effects of climate change.

Speaking at the inauguration, Rev. Stephen Mamza, Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese said desertification is real hence the need to put a stop to it.

Mamza, who is also the State Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), said that the trees would be planted through the Justice Development and Peace Commission.

“Our intention is to have a minimum of 20,000 trees planted across the diocese in the state.

“We know the intention of Pope Francis on this, he is strongly in support of cushioning the effects of climate change, especially we in the North-East part of the country.

“We are closer to the desert as we bordering Borno State than any other state.

“So the desertification is real and encroachment is coming in gradually, we need to do a lot in order to stop it, that is why we are flagging this tree planting,’’ he said.

According to him, the Catholic church intend to plant 20 million trees in 2023 across the country and at the end it is going to help improve the environment.

He expressed the need for parents and institutions to get involved in the exercise for the betterment of the environment to cushion desertification and effects of climate change.

He also expressed hope for more than 20,000 trees to be planted in the state.
