Chairman Neptune Prime Editorial Board, Prof. MK Othman, 9 others cleared for ABU VC race

Prof. MK Othman and nine other professors who have met the laid down criteria for Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) vice chancellor position have been cleared as the top contenders to appear before the selection board led by the Chairman, ABU’s Governing Council, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, on 4 February.
Others to appear before the board include, Prof. Sabitu, Prof. Nasiru Shuaibu, Prof. B. Y. Ibrahim, Prof. Sahalu Junaidu, Prof. Ahmed Doko, Prof. Nasiru Sambo, Prof. Idris Funtua, Prof. SZ Abubakar and Prof. Adamu Ahmad.
Earlier, 13 contenders from ABU for vice chancellor race were disqualified. This development had sparked outrage and concern among the university community.
In a letter dated 28 January 2025, Prof. Amin, a renowned professor of African Languages and Cultures at ABU, petitioned the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the ABU’s Governing Council, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process.

“I write to passionately appeal to the Chairman for a response to my application for the position of the ABU VC dated 1st December, 2024, received and duly acknowledged by the office of the Registrar and Secretary to Council of ABU on 11th December, 2024,” Prof. Amin stated in his letter.
As the selection interview for the vice chancellor position was scheduled for 4 February 2025, Prof. Amin said the academic community demands transparency, fairness, and accountability in the selection process.
The 10 top contenders that have been cleared to participate in the selection interview, have expressed confidence in the credibility, sincerity and commitment of the selection board members, who are all men of integrity.
Professor Othman, a lecturer with ABU is the chairman of Neptune Prime’s Editorial Board, is an Agricultural Engineer, irrigation specialist and consultant who was a two term Executive Director of the Ahmadu Bello University’s Nigerian Agricultural Extension and Research Liason Services (NAERLS).
